Rocky Mountain Section Summer Camp 2010 - Tantalus Range (Coast Mountains, BC)

Maximum of 12 Participants! Please book early as the 2009 Summer Camp was FULL over 6 months prior to the camp!

Overview

Every year the Rocky Mountain Section offers its members the opportunity to spend a week exploring mountaineering objectives with like-minded people and build climbing partnerships that will hopefully last beyond the end of the camp.

The destination has been set for the Tantalus Range, Coast Mountains, immediately NW of Squamish, BC.

This will be a fly in/fly out camp. We will be based out of the beautiful Jim Haberl hut, located in the Serratus-Dione col (2073m). We have an exclusive booking of the hut for the week. This classic area for mountaineering and rock climbing is located in Tantalus Provincial Park and includes many magnificent peaks and glaciers, including:

  • Mount Serratus (2362m)
  • Tantalus Peak (2603m)
  • Mount Dione (2590m)
  • Alpha Mountain (2305m)

By staying at the Jim Haberl hut we will be in easy striking distance of many routes in the area.

Dates:

Week 1: Sunday, July 25th - Sunday, August 1st, 2010 > FULL!
Week 2: Sunday, August 1st - Sunday, August 8th, 2010
Week 3: Sunday, August 8th - Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Cost:

The camp fees for the week will be $575 per person.
The section camp is run on a break-even basis with all costs being shared equally amongst the participants.
Please note that participants are required to pay their own costs for transportation to and from Squamish and any costs in Squamish such as lodging, meals, etc.

Reference materials

Alpine club members receive a 15% discount off maps and books purchased through the ACC National Office.

  • Maps: 92G/14 Cheakamus River
  • Guidebook: "Alpine Select, climbs in Southwest British Columbia and Northern Washington" by Kevin McLane
  • Web: www.bivouac.com
Objectives:

The geology here is mostly granite. The rock is generally very solid and provides exceptional opportunities for climbing and scrambling. There are many objectives in the area that vary from easy scrambles to snow & ice alpine routes to alpine rock routes. There is also potential for new routes.

The camp:

This camp is self-guided and self-catered so participants should have the requisite skills to contribute in every way to ensure a safe and successful camp. Please note that many approaches require snow and/or glacier travel and therefore a snow/ice course (or equivalent experience) is required.

All participants will be required to contribute to the camp by taking responsibility for pre/post camp tasks, daily tasks and for leading rope trips/teams.

There is NOT an ACMG guide on this camp.

During the week, we will be staying at the Jim Haberl hut. This beautiful hut is located at 2073m in the Serratus-Dione col and has stunning views in every direction. You merely step out the door and you are already climbing in the alpine!

This camp will be managed by John Peachell.

Winter 2010 - Golden Alpine Holydays Ski Camp (Golden area)

Overview:
Sentry Lodge is the northernmost of the four Golden Alpine Holiday lodges, located in the Esplanade Range of the Northern Selkirks, about 50 km northwest of Golden, B.C. The lodge is located at treeline, with lots of above and below treeline runs on all aspects.

The week: Jan 23rd-30th
We fly to and from the lodge by helicopter. The staging area is on the Trans-Canada Highway, about 50km west of Golden. We'll be self-guided and self-catered. Self-guided means we won't have professional guides leading trips. The camp manager and the more experienced participants will be organizing and leading trips, but every participant should have enough skill and experience to be fairly self-sufficient. Self-catered means we provide our own food for the week. We'll have shared dinners, with participants looking after their own breakfasts and lunches. For the shared dinners, I'll divide people into pairs who will be responsible for buying and preparing one dinner for the entire group.

The lodge:
The lodge accommodates 12 people in four bedrooms. Pillows, duvets, and sheets are provided. The kitchen has a propane stove with oven, plus all eating and cooking utensils, cups, bowls, plates, etc. Other amenities include sauna, running water, 2 indoor showers, electricity, stereo, 2 indoor bathrooms with odorless composting toilets, and wireless internet. See the Sentry Lodge web cam and the photo gallery.

Cost:
$975 per person (taxes included) for the helicopter flight in and out, and accommodation at the lodge.

How to book:
Email Mike Wingham at and he'll send you an application form. Mail him back the completed form, and send the section treasurer a $500 deposit cheque (details will be in the application form). Your application will be reviewed within a week of receipt. If it's accepted, your cheque will be deposited to the section's bank account. The $475 balance is due October 31. If your application is not accepted, your cheque will be destroyed.

Cancellation policy:
If you cancel before your application is accepted, you'll get a full refund. If you cancel after your application is accepted, you'll forfeit any payments you've made up to that point unless you can find a suitable replacement. If we don't receive the final $475 payment by October 31, we may cancel your spot and you could forfeit your deposit unless you can find a suitable replacement.
